Course Description

This course begins with a look at skin, its characteristics and functions and some statistics. Pressure ulcers, bedsores and pressure sores are described in detail, including symptoms, risk factors, where they occur and how to treat them, including the changing of dressings and monitoring the progress and effectiveness of the treatment.

This course begins with a look at skin, its characteristics and functions and some statistics.

Pressure ulcers, bedsores and pressure sores are described in detail, including symptoms, risk factors, where they occur and how to treat them, including the changing of dressings and monitoring the progress and effectiveness of the treatment. Case studies are provided as examples of symptoms, factors and risks.

An analysis is provided of equipment and materials and how they work to prevent and cure pressure ulcers. Risk assessment tools are explored including the Braden Scale, which uses six sub-scales to determine the risk of developing a pressure ulcer and the Waterlow Scale which uses nine factors to determine risk.

Finally, the Norton Scale uses five factors to determine risk. The five step process (SSKIN) is described for prevention and treatment of pressure sores.

Learning Objectives
On completion of this course, learners will have a good understanding of and be able to:

  • Identify anatomy and physiology of the skin in relation to pressure area care
  • Define pressure injury and the risk factors involved
  • Identify materials, equipment and resources available to support pressure area care
  • Identify steps to take in the preparation of pressure area care

The content of this course has been independently certified as conforming to universally accepted Continuous Professional Development (CPD) guidelines.

Certification
On successful completion of this course, you will be awarded a certificate which you will be able to download and print immediately on completion.

Duration
It is anticipated this course will take approximately 30 minutes to complete, depending on learning speed.
