This course looks at how pain and discomfort are common experiences during our lives. It is important to recognise the difference between the two within the healthcare sector, to ensure that individuals receive appropriate support and treatment.

The concept is illustrated with case studies and definitions of acute and chronic pain, which are further broken down into six categories. Clear diagrams describe the pain perception process (pain pathway) and how the impact of untreated pain can lead to debilitating conditions.

How are the signs and symptoms of pain described by individuals? What is the practitioner’s role in deciding how to best support the individual? Two tools to achieve this are reviewed: the pain rating scale and the pain management plan and the pain clinic is also described.

Finally the course reviews different pain management treatments in detail and the use of a pain and discomfort management diary.
